Understanding 5G Technology
What is 5G?
5G stands for “fifth generation” wireless technology. It’s the latest evolution in cellular networks, designed to deliver significantly faster speeds, lower delays (latency), and the ability to connect many more devices simultaneously compared to previous 4G networks. Think of it as a major highway expansion—more lanes, higher speed limits, and smoother traffic flow for your data.
How is 5G different from 4G?
5G offers several key improvements over 4G:
- Speed: 5G can deliver download speeds up to 20 times faster than 4G, with peak speeds reaching several gigabits per second.
- Latency: 5G reduces response time from around 30 milliseconds (4G) to as low as 1 millisecond, making connections feel virtually instant.
- Capacity: 5G can handle many more connected devices in the same area without slowing down, making it ideal for busy locations or expanding businesses.
- Reliability: 5G provides more consistent connections, even in challenging environments.
Do I need 5G, or is 4G sufficient for my business?
The answer depends on your specific needs:
Consider 5G if you:
- Need faster speeds for video conferencing, large file transfers, or cloud-based applications
- Plan to connect multiple devices at one location
- Want to future-proof your connectivity infrastructure
- Need backup internet for business-critical operations
- Operate in areas where cable or fiber internet isn’t available
4G may be sufficient if you:
- Have basic internet needs (email, web browsing, light data use)
- Have reliable wired internet and only need cellular as backup
- Are in an area with limited 5G coverage currently
The good news: Many 5G routers also work with 4G networks, so you’re covered either way and ready when 5G coverage expands in your area.
What is Fixed Wireless Access?
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) uses cellular networks (4G or 5G) to provide internet connectivity to a stationary location, like your office or business. Instead of relying on cable, fiber, or phone lines, a wireless router with a SIM card connects to nearby cell towers to deliver internet service. This makes FWA an excellent solution for locations where traditional wired internet is unavailable, unreliable, or expensive to install.
T-Mobile Coverage & Service
Does T-Mobile have good 5G coverage?
Yes. T-Mobile operates the largest 5G network in the United States, covering over 325 million Americans across 1.9 million square miles. Their 5G network includes:
- 5G Extended Range: Nationwide coverage that brings 5G to cities, rural towns, and everything in between, with average speeds 3 times faster than 4G.
- 5G Ultra Capacity: Higher-speed 5G available in major metropolitan areas and increasingly in suburban locations, delivering significantly faster speeds for demanding applications.
T-Mobile’s 4G network covers 99% of Americans, ensuring you stay connected even in areas where 5G isn’t yet available.
How can I check if T-Mobile 5G is available at my location?
You can check T-Mobile coverage in several ways:
- Visit T-Mobile’s interactive coverage map at t-mobile.com/coverage/coverage-map
- Enter your specific address or business location
- Toggle between 4G and 5G views to see what’s available
We also offer site surveys to assess signal strength at your location and recommend the best equipment and placement for optimal performance. Contact us to schedule a site survey.
What if I don’t have 5G coverage yet?
No problem. All the 5G routers we recommend also work with 4G networks, so you’ll have reliable connectivity now and be ready for 5G when it becomes available in your area. T-Mobile continues to expand its 5G network rapidly, so coverage is always improving.

How do I know which router is right for my needs?
Choosing the right router depends on several factors:
- Number of connected devices: How many computers, tablets, phones, and other devices will connect?
- Location type: Fixed location (office, retail store) or mobile (vehicle, temporary site)? Does your building have a metal roof? Is it a former bank building with structural characteristics that can impact wireless signal?
- Data usage: Light browsing and email, or heavy usage like video streaming and large file transfers?
- Carrier compatibility: Which cellular network you’ll be using
- Special features: Do you need external antenna ports, failover capabilities, or specific security features?
Our team will help you assess your requirements and recommend the best equipment for your situation. We’ll never sell you more router than you need—or less than will do the job right.
Can I use equipment from other providers with Connect Path’s services?
Yes, in most cases. However, we can only provide full technical support and warranty service for equipment purchased through Connect Path. We also cannot guarantee that third-party equipment will work optimally with the cellular service plans we provide. For the best experience and complete support, we recommend purchasing a complete solution through Connect Path.
Do your routers work with multiple carriers?
Many routers we offer are multi-carrier compatible, meaning they can work with T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and other major carriers. However, for optimal performance and full support, we recommend using equipment that’s been tested and optimized for your chosen carrier. Our team can guide you through carrier selection based on coverage in your area.

Coverage & Performance
How can I improve my signal strength?
Several factors affect cellular signal strength, and there are ways to improve it:
Best Practices:
- Place your router near a window or exterior wall
- Position router higher rather than lower (cellular signals come from towers, not underground)
- Avoid placing router near large metal objects or in basements
- Keep router away from electronic equipment that might cause interference
Signal Boosting Options:
- • External antennas can significantly improve signal strength and reliability
- We offer various antenna options for different scenarios
- Our site survey service helps identify the best router placement
Professional Assessment: Schedule a site survey with Connect Path. We’ll measure signal strength throughout your location and recommend the optimal setup for maximum performance.
What speeds can I expect?
Actual speeds vary based on several factors:
- Network type: 5G Ultra Capacity offers the fastest speeds, followed by 5G Extended Range, then 4G
- Signal strength: Stronger signals deliver faster speeds
- Network congestion: Speeds may be slower during peak usage times
- Service plan: Some plans may have speed limitations
- Equipment: Newer routers with advanced modems deliver better performance
Typical speeds range from 25-100 Mbps on 4G up to several hundred Mbps on 5G, with ideal conditions potentially delivering even faster speeds. We’ll help set realistic expectations based on coverage in your specific location.
What happens if cellular coverage is unavailable or slow?
For business-critical applications, we can design solutions with built-in redundancy:
- Dual-SIM routers with automatic failover between carriers
- Hybrid solutions combining cellular with wired internet
- Load balancing across multiple connections
During your consultation, we’ll discuss your reliability requirements and recommend appropriate solutions.
Technical Questions
Will this work with my existing network?
In most cases, yes. 5G routers can typically integrate with existing networks in several ways:
- As a primary internet connection, replacing or supplementing existing wired internet
- As a backup connection that activates when primary internet fails
- As a separate network for specific devices or guest access
Our installation service includes connecting the router to your network. If you have specific network requirements or complex infrastructure, let us know during the consultation so we can plan accordingly.
Do I need a static IP address?
Most customers don’t need a static IP address for typical business use. However, if you’re running servers, remote access systems, or certain security cameras, you may need one. Static IP addresses are available through T-Mobile Business for an additional fee. We’ll help determine if you need this feature based on your specific applications.
Can I use this for remote video surveillance?
Yes, cellular routers work well for video surveillance systems, especially in locations without wired internet. However, video surveillance can consume significant data, so you’ll need:
- An unlimited or high-capacity data plan
- Understanding of your camera’s data usage
- Proper configuration to avoid excessive data consumption
We can help you calculate data requirements and recommend appropriate service plans for video surveillance applications.
What about VPN connectivity?
Inseego routers support VPN connections, allowing secure remote access to your office network or secure connections to cloud services. Features vary by router model. Let us know if VPN is a requirement, and we’ll recommend equipment that supports your specific VPN needs.
